Program Description

HIV incidence continues to steadily increase among those groups that have historically been disproportionately affected. Black and Latino men who have sex with men (MSM), in particular, still face a hugely disproportionate risk for HIV infection relative to that of other populations. HIV prevention and other prevention strategies can be particularly challenging for MSM and other high-risk populations due to a variety of social and structural barriers. Chief among them is the community stigma that continues to surround homosexuality/bisexuality and HIV status. In light of the recent data on continuing disparities, overcoming obstacles to accessing prevention strategies is more critical than ever. Primary care providers are ideally positioned to identify and manage individuals at risk for HIV infection. This activity discusses the appropriate use of HIV-prevention strategies in patients at highest risk with a goal to provide primary care clinicians and other healthcare professionals with practical methods for implementing HIV-prevention strategies in patients who are most at risk.

Educational Objectives

After participating in this activity, clinicians should be better able to:

  • Describe the urgent need for HIV-prevention strategies among gay and bisexual men of color
  • Identify patients who are likely to benefit from HIV-prevention strategies
  • Utilize HIV-prevention strategies in appropriate patients
  • Employ evidence-based strategies to ensure that HIV-prevention education is provided to patients in a culturally competent manner
