Using Genome Mapping to Fight Antibiotic Resistance Bacteria

Whole genome sequencing is being used by the US Food and Drug Administration to combat the global spread of antibiotic resistance bacteria.

According to a US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) consumer report, “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that every year at least 2 million illnesses and 23,000 deaths in the United States are caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria.”1 As a consequence, the FDA is using whole genome sequencing to help identify the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria as early as possible.
