According to a US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) consumer report, “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that every year at least 2 million illnesses and 23,000 deaths in the United States are caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria.”1 As a consequence, the FDA is using whole genome sequencing to help identify the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria as early as possible.
