t is National Immunization Awareness Month, and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is highlighting a series of opinion pieces, Medicine Before Vaccines, written by senior pediatricians, to serve as a reminder what medicine was like before routine immunizations.
In this piece, written by Olson Huff, MD, a North Carolina pediatrician who has been practicing for decades, discusses his senior year in medical school - 1962 - when he worked at Louisville General Hospital.
"Measles is one of the most communicable diseases you can come across. The fevers associated with those patients were atrociously high, and the medication we used to reduce those fevers came with unfortunate side effects. The only thing we could do was treat the symptoms of measles; we could not help fight the measles infection itself at all." he wrote.
This piece serves as a good reminder to physicians why counseling about vaccines is so important. Please read the piece in it's entirety below, and weigh in on the discussion by emailing your thoughts to Infectious Disease Advisor's digital content editor, Colleen Hall, at [email protected]
