The interaction between medical students and attending physicians has become much less frequent in the age of hospital medicine, so increasing those interactions and informing medical students about the pros and cons of becoming an infectious disease physician is key to securing the future of the specialty.

In this video, Ebbing Lautenbauch, MD, from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine discusses the role infectious disease physicians can play in encouraging the next generation of the infectious disease workforce.

In the video, he notes that “planting a seed early on about what you enjoy and what you don’t will get them thinking about a career in infectious diseases,” he notes.
